setting the tone

A day of connection

A day of quality time together, if possible, helps set the tone going into your engagement session. it helps focus your mindset towards a sense of calm, and connectedness.

you can go for breakfast together, spend the day relaxing at home before getting ready, or go out for a drink before we meet up. if the whole day focused on the two of you isn’t an option, even setting aside an hour of time for connection before your session begins.

Location & activities

the best engagement session locations are ones that speak to you as a couple. whether it’s a place you both admire, or it has sentimental value, feeling excitement and comfort in a space translates into your overall experience and that transmits to your photos.

Light

while emotion is of the utmost importance, light is what helps us communicate this in photo form. because of this, light is always a part of the planning process, and a guiding source during the session. usually, the best time for light is in the early morning or late afternoon, as the sun is lower in the sky, and naturally creates a dreamier look.

on the other hand, if we are going to be indoors, we will want to consider when that particular space gets the best light pouring through windows.

practice

best not to overthink how you look in any moment, but sometimes a little practice can be relieving. while it can feel funny to do this, you might consider taking some time before the session paying attention to your facial expressions in the mirror or practicing movement with your partner. This could look like hugging, dancing, taking a walk together. just notice how you both go about things like this, in an affectionate way, that feels natural to you.

What to wear

feeling comfortable in what you wear during your session will truly make all the difference. if you feel good, you will look amazing! so, dress up, dress down, just consider what feels like an expression of who you are, and something you’ll be happy to be in.

in regards to what colors, patterns, shapes to wear, i recommend doing what feels right to you and considering the location and activities. between you and your partner, cohesiveness is better than being too matchy, and if we are gonig for a stroll through the park in the morning, your outfit choice will likely be different than if we are going for drinks at a cocktail bar in the evening.

If you are already planning on doing a hair and makeup trial before the wedding day, consider doing it on the day of your session. this way you can arrive feeling freshened up, and you’ll have one less task on your wedding planning to-do list.
